Pech Merle Cave tours in the Lot: the six compared
Why choose a guided tour instead of going alone
First, let me clarify that the cave is perfectly accessible on your own: you book a time slot on the official ticketing site and drive there. The issue arises when one of the two is missing. The cave is 40 km from Cahors train station, with no bus service, and the Prehistory Centre limits access to 700 people per day, in groups of 25 at most. In July and August, time slots sell out days in advance. An excursion that includes admission saves you from chasing a slot and then a taxi.
The downside, which I’ll mention right away: the guided cave tour lasts about an hour. On an eight-hour day, the cave is therefore a modest part of the programme. The rest covers the Lot Valley, Saint-Cirq-Lapopie and the towpath. If the cave is your only interest and you have a car, read how to get here instead and keep your day free.

Three full days, side by side
Three excursions last eight hours and depart from a city. They’re not all equal. The middle column is the one I recommend for those who want to visit the cave; the Sarlat column is included precisely because I’m often asked if it stops at Pech Merle. It doesn’t.

Which one to choose based on your starting point
You're staying in Cahors. The excursion from Cahors, no question. Departure from the city centre, the cave first, then Saint-Cirq-Lapopie and the towpath carved into the cliff at Bouziès. Small group, local driver-guide. Lunch is not included, giving you the choice of restaurant in Saint-Cirq.
You’re staying in Toulouse. Cahors train station is accessible by train from Toulouse, so the Cahors excursion is still possible with an early start. Alternatively, the private excursion from Toulouse combines Cahors (Valentré Bridge) and the cave with a local guide, in English or French. It logically costs more than a small-group tour, as it’s a private group. I discuss it on the private excursions page.
You're staying in Sarlat or the Dordogne. The excursion from Sarlat goes to Rocamadour and Saint-Cirq-Lapopie, not the cave. It’s well-rated (two reviews, top score), but if your goal is Pech Merle, you’ll need either a car or to head to Cahors.
You have a car and an extra day. Book the cave yourself and add a short guided tour: Rocamadour in a small group (1 hour 30 minutes, the highest-rated on this page), Saint-Cirq privately (2 hours), or truffle hunting near Cahors. I detail these combinations on the Lot Valley page.
Whatever your choice, check the group type before the rating. Recent activities have no reviews, which says nothing about their quality: I judge based on the program, the local operator, and the cancellation policy. Reviews, when available, can be found on the reviews page.

Frequently asked questions
Which tour includes entry to the Pech Merle cave?
Two out of the six: the excursion from Cahors (small group, entry included) and the private excursion from Toulouse (cave with a local guide). The activities in Rocamadour, Saint-Cirq-Lapopie, truffles and Sarlat do not include cave entry.
Does the excursion from Sarlat go via Pech Merle?
No. It goes to Rocamadour (guided tour) then to Saint-Cirq-Lapopie (self-guided visit), in a private van. It’s a great day out, but not a cave day. I explain the details in my review of the excursion from Sarlat.
Can you visit the cave without an excursion?
Yes, provided you have a vehicle and a time slot booked in advance. There’s no bus to Cabrerets. Everything is on the booking and tickets page and on how to get here.
Why don’t some excursions have a rating?
